  Maple Leaf (12" Finished) Block

Maple Leaf

Fabric Selection

From Fabric 1 cut 3 pieces measuring 4 1/2" Square

From Fabric 1 cut 2 pieces measuring 4 7/8" Square

From Fabric 1 cut 1 piece measuring 1 1/2" x 7 1/2"

From Fabric 2 cut 1 piece measuring 4 1/2" Square

From Fabric 2 cut 2 pieces measuring 4 7/8" Square

Take all of the 4 7/8" squares from both of the two colours (there will be a total of 5) and cut these on the diagonal to create a total of 12 half triangles.

Triangles

Take 1 triangle you have cut from Fabric 1 and 1 triangle you have cut from Fabric 2 and sew together. Repeat to create a total of 4 newly sewn squares.

triangles and squares

Take the remaining 2 triangles you hav cut from Fabric 2 and sew these either side of the rectangle that you have cut from Fabric 1. (don't worry if the ends do not meet)

Stem

This piece that you have just sewn is for the stem. You now need to trim this block to a 4 1/2" Square. The method that I use for this is to cut a
4 1/2" square from template plastic. Mark a diagonal line from the top right hand corner to the bottom left hand corner. Then mark 1/2" either side for this centre line.

Mark Lines

Place this template onto your sewn block lining up the centre line with the centre of the red rectangle and the lines and that you have marked either side of this centre line should line up with the side of the rectangle you have sewn. Then trim the block to a 4 1/2" Square.

Trim the block    Stem

Using the photo below layout all your sewn squares. Sew Block 1 to Block 2 and 3. Sew Block 4 to Block 5 and 6. Sew Block 7 to Block 8 and 9.

Block Layout

Now sew your rows together. Sew Row 1 to 2, and then to Row 3. Iron and you are done.
